The Baseball Archive provides a comprehensive look at major league baseball, from its beginnings to the current season. Included in this useful website are statistics on individual players and teams, links to official major league baseball websites, a bookstore, a bulletin board, essays, information on minor league baseball, and much more. From a math/science perspective, the most useful portions of this website are the Stats Archive and The Online Baseball Encyclopedia. These two portions of the website can be used to look up statistics on individual players and teams throughout the entire history of major league baseball, from 1871 to the present. These statistics could be useful in helping students develop an understanding of the different ways in which data can be analyzed. Most of the statistics on the site are also sortable. Once statistics have been presented, that information can be sorted in ascending order by clicking on the column headers.
At the time of this review, the website was undergoing a massive update to make it easier to navigate and find information, but I had no trouble finding any information and found the site very easy to use.
The statistical information provided on The Baseball Archive seems to be accurate and up-to-date, and the site appears to be a credible source of information on baseball. This site could prove useful for teachers and students in grades 3-12 as a source of statistical data.
**Review Updated: 9/8/05
This site is still very active and a good place for baseball fans to visit. The Stats Archive is still maintained and contains player and team statistics from 1871 to 2004. For anyone interested, there is a baseball database that can be downloaded or ordered on CD Rom.
